Getting to Augusta

Augusta sits on Georgia's Savannah River edge with I-20 just north of town and Augusta Regional Airport south of downtown. The city core is compact once parked, but a car remains useful for the canal headgates, Summerville, west Augusta, and public golf.

Augusta Regional Airport (AGS)

AGS is the local commercial airport south of downtown. Long-Term Lot A closed in late August 2026 for an approximately three-month project, reducing primary parking capacity; allow extra time and follow airport overflow instructions until the city confirms reopening.

Atlanta and Columbia

Atlanta offers the broadest flight network but adds a substantial I-20 drive. Columbia is closer by road for some itineraries, with a smaller flight schedule.

I-20 and the river crossings

I-20 supplies the main Atlanta-Columbia corridor north of downtown. Downtown drivers cross between Georgia and South Carolina on local Savannah River bridges; use live traffic for construction and incidents.

After arrival

Downtown sights can cluster into a walk, but the canal headgates, Summerville, west-Augusta hotels, public golf, and the airport still favor a car or rideshare.

Broad Street work spans the central blocks

Active work extends from 13th through Fifth streets, with some segments scheduled into early 2027. Use live city and Georgia 511 updates for lane changes, parking access, and the final approach to downtown.
